Review: The Book of Lost Souls (Ivy Mac Tavish #1) by Michelle Muto

The Book of Lost Souls (Ivy MacTavish, #1)

Book: The Book of Lost Souls (Ivy Mac Tavish #1)
Author: Michelle Muto
Publisher: Dreamscapes, Ink
Rating: 4.5 Stars
Level: Young Adult
Source: e-book Review Copy

Summary from Goodreads:
When teen witch Ivy MacTavish changes a lizard into her date for a Halloween dance, everything turns to chaos. And when no one is powerful enough to transform him back except Ivy, it sparks the rumor: Like father, like daughter. Ivy has heard it all before - that her father, who left when she was seven - was involved with the darkest of magic.

Making the rumors worse, someone uses an evil spell book to bring back two of history's most nefarious killers. Ivy's got a simple plan to set things right: find the real dark spell caster, steal the book, and reverse the spell. No problem! But she'll have to deal with something more dangerous than murderous spirits that want her and her friends dead: the school's resident bad boy and hotter-than-brimstone demon, Nick Marcelli. Nick's offering Ivy more than his help with recovering the missing book - he's offering her a way to ditch her scaly reputation as a lizard-lover. Demons are about as hard to handle as black magic, and as Ivy soon discovers, it's going to take more than a lot of luck and a little charm if she wants to survive long enough to clear her status as a dark witch, get a warm-blooded boyfriend, and have her former date back to eating meal worms before the week's end.

My Review:
The Book of Lost Souls is an exciting, humorous read with great characters and lots of laugh out loud moments. I'm giving it 4.5 stars!

Ivy, the main character is a witch who lives in Northwick where Regulars (humans) and Kindreds (supernaturals) live. Ivy has a major crush on Dean, popular guy in school, who seems to not know that Ivy exists. Ivy decides to change her friends pet lizard Spike into a human date, hoping Dean will finally notice her. Things start to go wrong from here. Ivy and her friends get into trouble when Spike goes missing. Their punishment is cleaning up the graveyard. This is where Ivy sees a mysterious man who seems to disappear into thin air. She also comes across two books and finds out there is a third book missing. Someone has the missing book that is pure black magic. Ivy has the other one. The book is spooky and full of black magic spells. Will Ivy turn to black magic like her father? Will they find Spike? You'll have to read The Book of Lost Souls to find out!

I could not and did not want to put this down. I was drawn in right from the beginning. If I was a Kindred I would love to have been a witch like Ivy. She has unique, interesting and fun friends. There is Raven and her brother Gareth, they are vampires. Shayde and Bane, twin werewolves and Nick, a totally hot demon. These characters and this entire story felt like it could be reality. I loved how Ivy and Nick could just send off spells quickly, sometimes with just one word. The lizard turned human, Spike, I really liked this character. He made me laugh a lot. Raven, love her name, is the kind of friend that you get into trouble with. Nick is just a complete hottie and a demon. I love the bad boys in books. These were my favorites in the book. I felt connected to these characters and this story, it just felt like I was right there, not reading about it.

There is always something happening. You won't get bored and will not want to put it down. Like I said it is humorous with lots of action and some romance. The ending was great but leaves it open so I'm hoping there will be a sequel. This was such a fun read, I was sad when I finished it. I will definitely read more from this author in the future. This e-book was given to me for review. This did not affect my review in any way.

*Sample Chapter *

A new boy enrolled in the eleventh grade at Plymouth North High. Rumor had it that the boy and his father recently relocated here after his mother’s death. The grief-stricken pair returned to Plymouth to seek the comfort of family and mourn their loss.
“OMG, Laney! Have you seen the new kid? He is so hot! Squeeee!” Carly babbled excitedly at the lunch table.
“No, I haven’t seen him. Before you walk up to him and drool all over him, you should know that he may not be in the mood for all of your charm,” I warned.
“Why? Is he gay?” she immediately assumed. “Oh God, why are all the hot ones gay?” She shook her head in annoyance.
“He’s not gay. I mean, I don’t know what he is. I just know the kid recently lost his mom to cancer. That’s why he and his dad moved here. They have family here or something.” I felt the need to clarify.
“Aw, that’s terrible!” she frowned momentarily. I nodded in agreement. I thought the subject would be closed, but Carly’s wheels continued to churn in her scheming noggin. “Well, he’ll be in need of comforting, right?” She smiled devilishly.
“You are a lost cause.” I shook my head in resignation.
Carly will be Carly.
“I can’t believe you just said that.” Jessica giggled around a mouthful of chicken nugget, or whatever it is they’re feeding us today.
“Oh honestly, people, sometimes I think I’m hanging out with a convent of nuns. Live a little.” She rolled her eyes.
I continued to shake my head, but said nothing.
“Not anymore!” Jessica beamed. “Not since Laney finally went on a date!”
“Yeah, we all know how well that went. You’re making real progress, Laney.” Carly said in mock concern as she patted my shoulder.
“Oh, shut up! For your information, he apologized to me today,” I defended myself.
It’s true I haven’t exactly put myself out there in the dating world, but it’s not like I’ve got an abundance of quality material to choose from, far from it.
“What? You mean, the great Jordan Stone apologized to you? Spill it! I want to hear the entire account of this apology word for word. Don’t leave out a single detail. Then I’ll decide if he deserves your forgiveness!” she ranted.
“I already forgave him.”
Jessica snickered at my words as she comprehended Carly’s horrified expression.
“What kind of damn retard are you, Laney Stillwater?
I just shrugged, once more, fully having anticipated this reaction from my BFF.
“I would have forgiven him too. Hell, I’d forgive him anything. Jordon Stone is practically a god!” Jessica admitted to me.
“Do not encourage her!” Carly continued to scowl.
Suddenly, Jessica gasped. “OMG! But he is an even prettier god!” Joshua Bangs, the new boy, walked into the cafeteria. “I am going to marry him and have his babies!”
Carly gave Jessica a creeper look.
“Well, you can’t call us nuns now.” I laughed.
“Don’t think you’re off the hook with lover boy. We will talk about this later,” she promised as her eyes nearly pierced through me. “Now, take a gander at that lovely thing over there.” She relaxed and smiled gesturing in the general direction of the entrance to the lunchroom.
“Fine.” I finally caved. I knew better than to prolong the inevitable. When I finally stole a glance at the new stranger, my heart nearly leapt out of my chest. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. “Impossible,” I barely murmured.
“I told you he was hot!” Carly bragged proudly.
I continued to stare straight ahead at the boy, frozen in amazement.

Review: What Once Was One (The Passage of Hellsfire #2) by Marc Johnson

What Once Was One
Book: What Once Was One (The Passage of Hellsfire #2)
Author: Marc Johnson
Publisher: Longshot Publishing
Rating: 4 Stars
Level: Young Adult
Source: e-book Review Copy

Summary from Goodreads:
In the land of Northern Shala, the dark wizard Premier raised an army of foul creatures from the Wastelands and led them against the ancient guardian city of Alexandria. Hellsfire, a young farmhand turned apprentice wizard, defeated Premier and saved Alexandria, but not before the battle claimed his mentor’s life.

Hellsfire, now a full-fledged wizard, must finish what he started by hunting down Premier and seizing the source of the wizard’s dark power and corruption—the Book of Shazul. He must travel deep into the Wastelands, through Premier’s home territory, dodging the scattered remnants of a defeated army lusting for blood and vengeance.

But beating in the heart of the Wastelands is an ancient power more dangerous than Premier or his creatures—and it’s been waiting for Hellsfire for a thousand years. It will force the young wizard to make a devastating choice—one that could change the course of history not only for Alexandria and the Wastelands, but for all of Northern Shala and the lands beyond. And to save his homeland, Hellsfire may have to lose the person he loves the most.

What once was one, will then be two, and never again be whole...

My Review:
What Once Was One is an fun epic read full of action and adventure. I enjoyed reading the first book where we were introduced to Hellsfire and watched him learn to become a wizard. In this second book Hellsfire is a full fledged wizard with more power than he knows what to do with sometimes.

Hellsfire is staying in Alexandria in the castle and having a secret relationship with the Princess. While most everyone is still unsure of a wizard the Princess and his friends have complete faith in him. Hellsfire and his friends must venture out into the wastelands to find and take care of Premier once and for all. Hellsfire knows that he only has so much time before Premier gets his full powers back. Something happens in the Nexus and there is a curse put on the Princess. I'm not going to say anymore as I don't want to spoil this for any readers.

I really liked where the author took this story to. We learned more about the backgrounds of some of the characters and was introduced to some new ones. This author writes so that you get a sense of what the places are like and it makes you feel as though you are really there. I loved all the action and adventure, it made the story flow well and was fun to read. There is some romance and lots of twists and turns. Every time you think the story is going one way it gets switched up and something else happens.

All in all a great sequel. I'm looking forward to reading the next one to see what will happen. This e-book was given to me for review. This did not affect my review in any way.

Feature & Follow

FF 2012 Feature & Follow #122

Q: Do you mind books with similar ideas to other books? Similar concepts, backgrounds, retellings or pulled-to-publish fanfic?

A: I don't mind.  I read a lot of books that are similar in one way or another.  As long as they bring some of their own ideas and change it up a bit, I'm alright with it.

Have a great weekend!

Review: The Savage Grace (The Dark Divine #3) by Bree Despain

The Savage Grace (The Dark Divine, #3)

Book: The Savage Grace (The Dark Divine #3)
Author: Bree Despain
Publisher: EgmontUSA
Rating: 4 Stars
Level: Young Adult
Source: Purchased

Summary from Goodreads:

A troubled soul. An impossible choice. A final battle.

Wrestling with the werewolf curse pulsing deep inside of her, Grace Divine was finally able to find her brother, but it nearly cost her everything.

With her boyfriend, Daniel, stuck in wolf form and Sirhan's death approaching, time is running out for Grace to stop Caleb Kalbi and his gang of demons. If she fails, her family and hometown will perish. Everything rests on Grace's shoulders.

The final installment in The Dark Divine trilogy brings Daniel and Grace's love story to a breathtaking conclusion.

My Review:
The Savage Grace picks up where The Lost Saint left off. Daniel is still a white wolf and Grace is trying her hardest to figure out how to make him human again. Grace is dealing with a lot in this one. She is in her senior year of high school, her inner wolf wants out and she has the Lost Boys looking to her as their alpha's mate. If that isn't enough, Caleb and his crew are after her and then there's Sirhan and his pack.

We learn more about Daniel's background, who he truly is. Grace learns to control her inner wolf and uses her powers as The Divine One for good. There is just so much that happens, all the loose ends are tied up. The characters from the previous books are back along with some new ones for a finale you don't want to miss. The battle towards the end is one of the best battles that I have read in a book.

I have to say that I love this trilogy but this one started out a bit slow for me. The beginning was so focused on Grace and Daniel being a wolf, I didn't think he was ever going to become human again. After you get past this though, the story picked up and became interesting and exciting. There were parts that I thought were slow and others that happened too fast but it all worked out. There are a lot of twists and turns, and lots of action. There are some bittersweet moments. I was shocked by a betrayal and some of the deaths. I wish the author would continue this beyond a trilogy. I'm gonna miss reading about Grace and Daniel. All in all this is a great trilogy that I am happy to have read and own. You know in case I want to read it again and again. :)
